Dress for Success Power Walk

On May 7, 2011, with a backdrop of sunny weather and sprouting water fountains, participants met in the Plaza at Entrance 2 of Northgate Mall.  They were fueled with a great selection of food and beverages from our in-kind sponsors, Chick-fil-A, Dunkin’ Donuts, Honest Ade, Panera Bread, Starbucks Coffee and Whole Foods.

Over 120 people walked (some even ran) inside Northgate Mall to the rhythmic sounds of the Dub Addis and with the Chick-fil-A cow, had the opportunity to take pictures with and talk with Miss Durham 2011 - Hailey Best, and finished the day with Zumba and line dancing with Leigh Williams. From the smallest babe to us older babes, everyone seemed to truly enjoy themselves!

Thanks to the support of our sponsors, volunteers and walkers, we will be able to help more than 50 women receiving our services which in turn will impact their children.

The total raised, as of May 7, is $14, 290.40!

May 26, 2011 was our annual Senior Day event that had dancing, crafts and prizes!

A story about one of the Heart & Sole Mall Walkers Club members- July 2010

Sue Miller 76, moved to Durham from Alaska in September 2007. She had open heart surgery in 2008 and healed very quickly. Her cardiologist was amazed at how quickly she recuperated. Her secret for staying healthy is exercise. Because she exercises 7 days a week and has for many years now, the healing processes went along much faster than if she did not exercise. Sue was able to get back to normal activities within 6 weeks!

During a follow up exam with a pulmonary Dr. after her open heart surgery, it was confirmed that she was diagnosed with medium to advanced stages of COPD. COPD is a progressive disease where one may require supplemental oxygen.. Her last test this past June, however, proved that her breathing had improved 10% from a year before. Her Dr. told her that if she continued to exercise as much as she does, she may never require additional oxygen. Sue does 3 major exercises a day spending 1.75 hours a day…… and sometimes more!

While visiting family in Manhattan in June, she not only kept up with her children and grandchildren, she walked at least 2.5 miles a day and took the steps up and down to the subway entrances and exits.

She also attributes exercise to helping her self esteem, independence, and having dropped a dress size. In early July, Sue held her very 1st Sr. aerobics class at the Croasdaile Retirement home where she resides.
