Get creative at the Durham Arts Council Clay Studio!

The Clay Studio at Northgate offers a variety of classes for all ages including special monthly Clay Date Nights on the first Friday of each month.


Fall Class offerings

Clay Date Night (Ages 18 & up)

Grab your spouse or a friend and have a creative night out at the DAC Clay Studio. Participants will have the opportunity to experiment with clay as the instructor introduces a variety of handbuilding techniques. Each person will complete and paint a functional piece of pottery that will be glazed and fired by the instructor and available for pick up 2 – 3 weeks after the workshop.

Kids Night Out (Ages 6-12)

Have some fun and make something great at the Clay studio (and parents can sneak away and grab a bite or do some shopping at Northgate Mall). Each kid will complete and paint a piece of pottery that will be glazed and fired by the instructor and available for pick up in 2-3 weeks after the workshop. Make something different every month! Parent/Child Clay Workshops! (Ages 2 & up)

These workshops are a great way to get creative with your child. Each workshop will allow your child, with your assistance, to create their very own ceramic artwork. Take one, or take them all! Because the projects need to be fired, artwork will be available for pick up 2 – 3 weeks after the workshop.

Snow People

Create a Snow Person with clay using coils and pinch pots and then paint it with liquid colored clay!

Beginning/Intermediate Wheel

Use the potter’s wheel to make cups, mugs, bowls, vases & much more. If you’ve never used a potter’s wheel before, you’ll learn the skills needed to make pottery. If you’re a returning student, we’ll focus on improving your skills.

Curious about clay? Haven’t touched the stuff since kindergarten? Well now is your chance to learn the basics of hand-building. This class will cover pinch pots, working with coils and slab construction. Challenge yourself, try something new and go home with something great.

Create 3-dimensional art, using basic sculptural hand-building techniques. You will also explore surface treatments with texture, glazes and colored slips. Please note, we do not teach wheel technique in this course, but we encourage students with such skills to incorporate thrown work with hand-built. All skill levels are welcome!

Kitchen Gadgets

We will learn to make a series of kitchen gadgets in clay, including citrus juicers, butter dishes, cheese bells, salt rocks, cake stands, ladles, and more (suggestions welcome)! Previous wheel experience required.

Light Switch Covers

Using slab construction you will build your own light switch cover. You can use stamps and molded forms to decorate and then use colored clay to paint it.

Thrown from the Wheel

Wild Creatures of the Outdoors

Create a one-of-a-kind animal creature out of clay. We will hand-build replicas of real creatures or ones from our imaginations, then paint them.
